![]() In particular: archers in the right formation are a great force multiplier. You can beat more numerous enemies if you use these. (The enemy often starts with more cities.) (Well, not in the first map, obviously, but afterwards.) Use these to expand before the enemy can bring their superior production capability online. In the campaign especially you will usually start out with a bunch of units or heroes you took from the last map, as well as a high-level leader. (Fortunately, the AI usually puts its stacks in a line formation.) A line is weaker, since the ends of the line might not be adjacent to the front of the line. That way, no matter which stack gets attacked, all 3 of yours will appear on the tactical map. The strongest formation is three stacks in a triangle. The result of this rule is that it's very important to keep your armies together when moving in your turn, otherwise the enemy can pick them off one by one in their turn. If you take the time to surround one of those stacks with 4 of your own, the ensuing battle will see 4 of your stacks versus 2 of theirs. So, if two enemy stacks are standing next to eachother and you attack one of them, both will appear on the tactical map. Every stack that is adjacent (on the strategic map) to the stack you are attacking will also end up on the battlefield, in a position corresponding to its position on the strategic map. It's called the "Adjacent Hex rule."īasically, the enemy you are attacking will take up position on the centre of the tactical battle map. ![]() Keldan21: I have completed the tutorial of Age of Wonders 1 and tried to play the campaign as the good side, I keep getting beaten in the first scenario, I cannot work out how to combine two armies on the same tactical battlefield, the AI keeps doing this to me so my armies are always outnumbered.
